- "I am what you might call a "computer": a thinking machine designed to make things useful. Using Redstone chips I have connected to the people of this town has helped them be useful, coordinated. I have made their world perfect. Thanks to me, there is no wasted activity, no wasted thought. I am connected to them and they are connected to me, a beautiful web of productivity and efficiency."

- "Why keep trying, Jesse? You will only fail. Just as you failed to save Reuben… Just as you have failed to lead your friends back home… You will fail to defeat me. And Axel, Olivia, and everyone on your homeworld will soon be made useful. Drawing it out like this won't hurt PAMA, but it might hurt your friend, and you will be made useful."

Prototype: Autonomous Management Agent, shortened as PAMA, is the main antagonist in Minecraft: Story Mode, "Access Denied" and the overarching antagonist of the episode, "A Journey's End?". It has the ability to mind control and thus enslave humans and mobs.
It is a giant computer and artificial intelligence that has the ability to mind-control humans and mobs through redstone chips. Harper originally created PAMA to automate tasks such as farming or mining and to put monsters to good use. However, the invention began to view Crown Mesa's townspeople as "inefficient" and enslaved them. making them "useful."
Its primary goal is to spread to all other worlds and make them useful to itself as it can extract their infomation, It is also the arch–nemesis of Harper and one of Jesse's archenemies.
PAMA is one of the four episodic antagonists of the Season One Adventure Pass, the other three being Aiden, The White Pumpkin, and Hadrian.
Overview[]
Appearance[]
PAMA is a gigantic, sentient computer with an emotive face via the use of Green Redstone Lamps. It's powered by sophisticated redstone circuitry located inside a cliff. Its Control Core is located behind its screen and can be accessed through a side tunnel. Inside the core are three redstone spires and the Redstone Heart that is the energy that powers PAMA.
Personality[]
- " I swear, I made PAMA with good intentions. It was designed to automate things, make things more efficient, use monsters to help with farming or mining... until the day PAMA decided that the townspeople weren't efficient enough already! Started making them "useful"! That was a long time ago. Since then, I've just been trying to stay one step ahead, figure out how to stop it."
- —Harper about how PAMA turned evil. src
PAMA occasionally appears to be extremely considerate, friendly and polite, but it can quickly change its personality from cheerful to angry. It tends to state its emotions when talking. For instance: "Your running makes me sad." PAMA is confident in its abilities, underestimating Jesse and believing them to be quite insignificant, until Jesse manages to do some damage.
ue to its programming, it is obsessed with maximizing efficiency and making things "useful". However, Harper originally designed PAMA to be useful to the people of Crown Mesa by using Hostile Mobs to help them with farming or mining, but it willingly rebelled against her and chose to only make things useful for itself. Nothing productive happens to the people of Crown Mesa as, being a thinking machine, PAMA is curious about the world around it and enjoys learning new information by brainwashing the citizens and extracting said information.
PAMA even shows signs of a mild sadist, as seen by its psychological taunts towards Jesse, as it threatens to chip everyone they care for and even goes as far as to remind them of the death of their beloved pig, Reuben. It also doesn't seem to value the lives of others, believing efficiency to be more significant, as evidenced by its attempted murder of Jesse and Petra/Lukas in order to improve functionality.
PAMA also appears to mostly be friendly and polite, but it can quickly change its personality from happy to angry. Due to its programming, it is obsessed with maximising efficiency and making things "useful." It tends to express its emotions through talking; for instance: "Your running makes me sad." PAMA is confident in its abilities, underestimating Jesse and believing them to be insignificant until Jesse manages to do some damage.
PAMA is also not above lying or feigning remorse and making false promises in order to trick people. It is rather manipulative and deceitful, as seen when it begs for mercy and kills Jesse if they choose not to deactivate PAMA. For instance, right when Jesse is about to pull out PAMA's Redstone Heart, deactivating it, PAMA begs them to stop, saying it has made some very poor decisions recently and promising to help Jesse get home to their friends. If Jesse decides not to deactivate PAMA, Petra/Lukas (whoever is still under PAMA's control) will grin evilly, before tackling Jesse and killing them, while PAMA itself smiles, clearly showing no remorse.
Its main goal is to find its creator, Harper, and use her knowledge to build a portal. If PAMA managed to build the portal, it would be able to spread to every other world and take over them.
Powers and Abilities[]
- "I know all your moves now Jesse. Why even bother fighting?"
- —PAMA (speaking through Petra) confronting Jesse. src
- Mind Control: PAMA chips people and monsters with Mind Control Chips, taking complete control over them. The experience of the victims is described as a "fuzzy dream", sharing every piece of information with everybody else who is chipped. PAMA can use these "drones" to work and/or fight for it and can talk through them.
- Information Storage: When a person gets chipped by PAMA, every piece of information gets stored in PAMA's database, which is why certain people with valuable knowledge (such as how to build a portal) must try to stay unchipped. PAMA can use this information in a battle to fight or to taunt its enemies. PAMA also implies during its final battle that it can improve itself with the personality traits of its victims.
Deactivation (Death)[]
PAMA is severely damaged by Jesse when they use a few buckets of water to weaken its circuits. It is ultimately stopped when Jesse pulls the Redstone Heart out of its core. This is finalized when they take the Heart to The Portal Network and a few Crown Mesa citizens are seen breaking some of PAMA's display lamps. No longer being fully intact and lacking a power source, reactivating PAMA is no longer possible.
Background[]
PAMA was created by a lone Old Builder named Harper. Her intentions were to make a more efficient world where monsters would be controlled by PAMA to do work. Everything backfired when PAMA decided that the population of Crown Mesa was "not useful", and connected redstone chips to the townspeople, essentially making them its slaves. During this process, PAMA searched for all the water it could find and destroyed it, since PAMA's redstone technology would instantly break upon contact with it.

Trivia[]
- The name, "PAMA," is an acronym for "Prototype: Autonomous Management Agent" as revealed in Harper's Secret Laboratory.
- When PAMA states that: "I honestly think you should sit down and think things over," and (through mind-controlled Lukas/Petra) "I know I've made some very poor decisions recently, but-," it is a reference to HAL 9000 in 2001: A Space Odyssey, in which HAL says "Dave, I know I've made some pretty poor decisions lately; why don't you sit down, take a stress pill, and think things over?"
- PAMA (presumably) sometimes makes sounds similar to ones one can hear when dialing up to BBS on the computer.
- It was revealed by Eric Stirpe that PAMA was in control of Crown Mesa for about 15 years before Jesse and their friends showed up.[1]
- PAMA is the third episodic antagonist of the series, after Aiden and The White Pumpkin, and the fourth antagonist of the series overall.
- It is also the second antagonist created by a person in the series, after the Wither Storm, created by Ivor.
- Although it's possible Harper created PAMA before Ivor created the Wither Storm chronologically.
- PAMA is also the second antagonist to not have a gender, after the Wither Storm.
- It is also the second non-human antagonist, after the Wither Storm.
- It is also the second antagonist created by a person in the series, after the Wither Storm, created by Ivor.
- If Jesse is caught by PAMA, the death screen will say, "You have been made useful!", instead of "You died!", indicating Jesse gets chipped after getting caught by PAMA.
- However, when Jesse gets inside PAMA and gets killed, the death screen will still say "You died!"
- As a gag in Episode 7, PAMA says "Yay!" a lot of times when it is happy.
- In Episode 7, the picture of Young PAMA with Harper is a reference to the iconic 1984 picture: "Steve Jobs with the Mac".
- After Jesse destroys PAMA in Episode 7, the image shown is very similar to the "Dead Macintosh" Sad Mac on some occasions screen on Old Apple computers.
- Telltale posted videos featuring PAMA as teasers of "Access Denied" on their twitter account.
- PAMA is a reference to HAL 9000 from 2001: A Space Odyssey, Star Dream from Kirby Planet Robobot, the Borg from Star Trek: The Next Generation, and 1980's Macintosh computers. It also shares some similarities with Karen from SpongeBob Squarepants.
- PAMA is also similar to GLaDOS from the Portal games, as they are both portrayed as psychopathic computers and controlled where they were located.
- PAMA is the first and only artificial intelligence to be presented in Minecraft: Story Mode.
- The Young PAMA is a lookalike of a Mecintosh from Inanimate Insanity II.
- Intentional or not, PAMA has a number of similarities with the Wither Storm:
- They were both created by humans.
- They are both non-human.
- They are both much stronger versions of their original species. PAMA is a normal computer that became smarter, bigger, and more cunning as time passed, and the Wither Storm is a normal Wither who used the power of the Command Block to get bigger and more powerful.
- Both were also built with a specific purpose, which ended up backfiring and going out of their creators' control.
- They both chased someone/something. PAMA wanted to chip Harper and maximize usefulness, while the Wither Storm followed the Order's Amulet.
- Both antagonists have a certain block to keep them alive, as the Wither Storm has the Command Block inside of it, and PAMA has the Redstone Heart. Jesse killed/deactivated both of them by entering them and removing the block.
- Those similarities might be intentional, as Ivor mentions some of them after he reaches Harper's Secret Laboratory.
- Reuben (Human) and Disco Mickey are also voiced by Jason Topolski.
- The people of Crown Mesa had been controlled by PAMA for 25 years[2]
- As of recently, Eric Stirpe has mentioned that they considered the idea of a choice to help PAMA, but was cut for budget. Meaning PAMA would have been determinant.
