"Hero in Residence" is the first episode of Minecraft: Story Mode - Season Two.

Plot[]

Chapter 1[]

"I tell ya, I am just the luckiest."
"Yeah?"
"Oh yeah! Getting to work with you, hanging out with the Order... And living in the coolest town in the whole world: Beacontown."
Radar and Jessesrc

The episode begins with Lukas narrating, reading from his book about the adventures of the New Order of the Stone and Jesse's rise to fame as a hero. Lukas, Jesse, Axel, and Olivia discuss the book in the Order Hall. Olivia points out Lukas' tendency to exaggerate in his storytelling, and Jesse can tell Lukas to either embellish for a more exciting narrative or stay true to the facts. Lukas takes the feedback and continues editing his book. Axel notes that Ivor and Harper have been gone a long time on their adventures.

Radar, Jesse's intern and assistant, arrives at the Hall with news that Petra is on her way to Beacontown's mines for a planned adventure, prompting Jesse to get ready. Axel and Olivia are unable to join them on the adventure due to their responsibilities in their respective towns, Boom Town and Redstonia. Lukas, wishing to finish his book, also opts out of the adventure. Axel promises to join them on the next adventure.

The group briefly discusses Founding Day, a holiday marking the defeat of the Wither Storms and the formation of the New Order of the Stone. This celebration takes place not only in Beacontown, but also in Boom Town and Redstonia. With preparations underway, Axel, Olivia, and Lukas head off to manage their duties for the event, while Jesse and Radar stroll through town to help locals prepare. Jesse builds a clay statue for Nell, then meets Stampy Cat, Stacy Plays, and their puppy Wink, whom Jesse can feed with a bone. Stacy gives Jesse two more bones.

As Jesse heads to the mines, he/she can do the following:

  • Help a citizen choose a pig to portray Reuben for a play
  • Recall to a citizen his/her build in the EnderCon Building Competition
  • Talk with a citizen about his building concerns
  • Help a citizen named Bob and two others prepare for their slime-diving activity
  • Craft a cake, pumpkin pie, or both for Stampy Cat and Stacy Plays
  • Activate a piston contraption (and get hit by it)
  • High-five the Fangirl

Having helped the locals with their preparations, Jesse and Radar arrive at the mines. Radar expresses his admiration for Jesse and offers to oversee Beacontown while he/she is away with Petra. Donning an iron chestplate, Jesse heads down into the mineshafts.

Chapter 2[]

"Glad you finally made it./I gotta say, I really do appreciate you making it on time. It means a lot to me. Sometimes I worry you don't even have time for me-- your friends anymore. I mean I get that you like your job and everything... but geez."
—Petra to Jesse about his/her job as a "leader and Hero in Residence." src

In the mines, Jesse encounters a few zombies, which he/she fights off with an iron sword. If unsuccessful in defeating them, Petra appears and rescues him/her. If successful, Petra appears anyway, disappointed that the rest of their group could not join. She blames their leadership roles, which have kept them busy from their adventures.

Jesse notices Petra wielding an iron sword and asks about her signature gold sword, "Miss Butter." However, the conversation is interrupted by the sudden appearance of zombies. After defeating the zombies, the two race through the mines in pursuit of what Petra claims to be a "mystery monster."

Near the end of the race, Petra is attacked by spiders. Jesse can choose to either help her or run ahead and win the race. Regardless, the two catch the "mystery monster," only to learn it is a llama, much to Jesse's annoyance. Petra claims that it is a "treasure-sniffing llama." Jesse tries to tame it, but it spits at and kicks him/her, breaking his/her iron chestplate before running away. He/she and Petra capture it near a gravel cliff.

The two realize that the llama has led them to an unexplored section of the mining tunnels. They spot a mysterious prismarine gauntlet sitting atop a sand pyramid; attached to it is a slot with an odd symbol. As they approach, an unidentified voice softly utters Jesse's name and cites his/her achievements.

"Jesse... The Slayer of the Wither Storm... The Savior of Sky City... The Liberator of Crown Mesa... The Old Builders' Downfall... This world's champion... This world's mightiest hero... The most worthy... Worthiest in all the land..."
—The Prismarine Gauntlet whispering to Jesse. src

Jesse climbs the pyramid to retrieve the gauntlet. However, upon contact, it firmly bonds itself to his/her hand. Petra tries to take off the gauntlet off Jesse, but is unsuccessful; she comes to believe that Jesse was meant to find the gauntlet. Suddenly, the pyramid collapses, revealing a massive, prismarine chasm under the surface of the earth. After pulling Jesse to safety, Petra names it the "Heckmouth."

Chapter 3[]

"Oh, look who it is: Jesse! Leader of Beacontown, and my sworn rival."
Stella meeting Jesse, her "rival." src

Jesse and Petra temporarily block the Heckmouth with dirt blocks. Jesse suspects that the slot next to the pyramid, marked with a strange symbol, might be the solution to their Heckmouth problem. Meanwhile, the path to the mines is blocked by gravel that seems to have fallen from nowhere. The two, along with the llama, escape through a hole in the cave's ceiling.

Once outside, Jesse notices that the Heckmouth is too close to Beacontown, and Petra suggests leaving a warning sign. Jesse can choose one of the following messages to write on the sign:

  • "Warning: Heckmouth."
  • "Keep off the grass."
  • "Top secret: go away."
  • "Nothing to see here."

Jesse then asks Petra about the Gauntlet. Petra tells him/her about a renowned treasure-hunter in Beacontown named Jack, who she claims is an expert on prismarine and ocean monuments. She promises to take Jesse to Jack's shop once she finishes dealing with the "treasure-sniffing llama."

Jesse questions Petra about the llama and learns that Petra had been tricked by a woman named Stella, the treasure-obsessed leader of Champion City, Beacontown's neighboring city. Stella had coerced Petra into giving her Miss Butter, with the condition that Petra deliver the llama to her. Jesse agrees to accompany Petra to Champion City and help her retrieve her sword.

Petra explains that Champion City is a strict place where all citizens owe something to Stella and are forced to work for her. Stella makes sure that everything in the city is "organized." Lluna, the llama, appears reluctant to see Stella.

Upon arriving in Champion City, Petra delivers Lluna to Stella, who is seen selling puppies to her citizens. Stella orders her bodyguard, Rodrigo, to take Lluna to her home.

Despite having never met before, Stella immediately recognizes Jesse as her "rival" and inquires about the rivalry between Beacontown and Champion City. Jesse can either play along or respond that there is no such rivalry. Stella then offers to trade a puppy for Jesse's Prismarine Gauntlet. Jesse declines, either politely or harshly.

Having delivered Lluna, Petra demands Miss Butter back, but Stella refuses. She reveals that Petra had once come to her to become Champion City's champion and has since been living in Champion City instead of Beacontown. Petra had kept this secret, fearing it would upset Jesse. After Stella leaves, Petra and Jesse plan to break into Stella's treasure hall to retrieve Miss Butter. Jesse decides whether they will fight their way in or sneak through the puppy kennel.

"No matter what happens, no matter how much I do, you're the big hero. You probably don't even remember what it's like adventuring out there, scrounging for resources. Just look at today! We were supposed to go on one adventure, and you were late. I can't even get my 'friends' to spend time with me./You were on time today. That was great. But it's hard to ignore that none of our friends are ever around anymore! Do you know how it feels to show up for quest after quest and just hearing, 'Aw man. I'm sorry. Next time! Next time!' It gets embarrassing."
—Petra to Jesse (Determinant). src

Fight their way in: Jesse and Petra defeat Stella's bodyguards and enter the treasure hall. Petra vents her frustration, blaming Jesse and their other friends for not being there for her anymore. Inside the room, they discover that the "treasures" Stella has on display are merely items she bought from others, before realizing Miss Butter is missing. Stella appears behind them, holding Miss Butter and preparing to fight Jesse. However, Jesse quickly disarms her.

Sneak through: Jesse uses the bones Stacy Plays gave him/her earlier to distract the wolf pups in the puppy kennel. They successfully sneak into the treasure hall, where, likewise, Petra vents her frustration. The two catch Stella pretending to be Petra while playing with Miss Butter. They realize Stella is actually a huge fan of the New Order of the Stone who hopes to emulate them. Embarrassed, Stella surrenders Miss Butter and asks them to forget they ever saw her.

After taking the sword, Jesse and Petra leave Champion City, with Stella shouting that history will remember this as a pivotal moment in their "rivalry." The two head back to Beacontown; Petra thanks Jesse for accompanying her. As they pass the Heckmouth, Jesse's Prismarine gauntlet begins to whisper and emit strange noises.

Suddenly, an explosion shakes the ground, revealing the Heckmouth, which starts spawning charged creepers. Jesse and Petra fight off the creepers, but Jesse's iron sword breaks in the process. Using the prismarine gauntlet, Jesse discovers its power, able to eliminate multiple creepers with a single punch. After the battle, they cover the Heckmouth with dirt once again. As night falls and rain pours, Jesse and Petra head to Jack's shop.

Chapter 4[]

"The Warriors of the Whispering Mountain call me 'The Stab-Walker.' The Air Titans of the East call me 'He Who Slashes Like Thunder.' But you may call me... Jack."
—Jack's self-introduction. src

Jesse and Petra return to Beacontown, where Petra leads them to Bad Luck Alley, a district known for its residents who thrive on being "outside the rules." Petra reveals that she has never actually met Jack in person; she has only heard stories about him. She admires Jack as a legend and is visibly nervous about the meeting. Jesse can tell her to play it cool or just be herself, which influences how Petra behaves around Jack later.

The two enter Jack & Nurm's Adventure Emporium, and Petra is immediately excited by the sight of Jack's global treasures. Jesse spots a button labeled "Push for service" and presses it.

Jack appears, and Petra's excitement grows. He remarks that it was brave of Jesse to press the button before vanishing and reappearing behind them to introduce himself. When Jack asks how he can assist, Jesse reveals the Prismarine Gauntlet. Jack is visibly shaken and initially denies knowing anything about it. However, after Jesse calls him out on the lie, Jack admits to knowing about the Gauntlet. He warns them that the Heckmouth is incredibly dangerous, and explains that the symbol Jesse saw is linked to the Structure Block—a powerful block capable of instantly creating creatures. The block could help close the Heckmouth, and is located in the far-away Sea Temple.

Just then, a cartographer villager named Nurm enters, and Jack introduces him as the "genius behind all their fine maps." Jack tells Jesse and Petra that he cannot help them, believing the temple is too perilous, and reveals that he vowed never to return there. He shows them the world map, similar to the one found in the Temple of the Order of the Stone. With a flick of a lever, he reveals even more unexplored regions beyond the known world. However, one section of the map is missing—Jack reveals he threw it into a volcano.

Jack explains that he's been in Jesse's shoes before. Years ago, Jack discovered a Prismarine Gauntlet with his friends Vos and Sammy, and they ventured into the Sea Temple. Only Jack returned alive. Jack has since tried to forget about the experience; however, his "perfect sense of direction" kept the temple's location imprinted in his mind.

After some discussion, Jack reluctantly agrees to help them reach the temple. Jesse can encourage him to confront his past, and Jack admits that Jesse's words inspired him. Jack and Nurm leave to prepare for the journey, and Jesse and Petra discuss Jack. If Jesse told Petra to play it cool, he/she can now tell her to stop. Nurm returns to help create a new map of the area around the Sea Temple. Jack, however, teases Jesse, saying he/she looks too "squishy" for an adventure, prompting Jesse to head to the Order Hall to equip an armor set.

"Short version? The town's in danger. I stopped it for now, but I think this can help me fix it permanently. I'll be gone for a little bit."
—Jesse to Radar. src

Jesse, Petra, Jack, and Nurm arrive at the Order Hall, where Radar immediately begins briefing Jesse on various Founding Day duties. Jesse can choose to let him finish or interrupt. When Radar finishes, Jesse explains that they need to leave for an adventure to save the town from the Heckmouth. Radar questions who will protect Beacontown; Jesse can either leave him in charge or assure him that the town can handle itself. Jack, trying to scare Radar, causes him to flee.

Jack admires Jesse's collection of treasures and notes that he/she is becoming a great adventurer. Jesse then activates Olivia's new "armor-up sequence," revealing several sets of armor; Jesse can choose which set to equip for the journey. Petra apologizes to Jesse for the trouble caused, and the group sets off for the "Doom Sea," as Jack has dubbed it, where the underwater Sea Temple lies.

After a long journey, the group arrives at an island where Jack and his team previously staged their last Sea Temple adventure. As Jack shares tales of his past adventures, including one about an "amazing woodland mansion," Petra fangirls over him, while Jesse appears somewhat annoyed. Jack ominously warns the group that the "rules" of the world do not apply in the temple, likely because it was built by the Admin, the world's alleged creator. While Jack is skeptical about the Admin's existence, Nurm is convinced that the Admin is real.

Using his "perfect internal compass," Jack locates the Sea Temple and hands out enchanted helmets to allow for underwater breathing, which he acquired from "the Deep Dwellers of Hon'bar Crevasse." The group dives into the ocean, swimming past shoals of fish and landing on a ridge. They eventually reach a ledge in front of the Sea Temple, a massive prismarine structure.

A guardian mob suddenly emerges, attacking the group. Jesse defeats the guardian, only to be confronted by a whole group of them. Jesse inserts the Gauntlet into a slot at the temple's entrance, activating a mechanism which kills the guardians and opens the temple's gate. As more guardians approach, Jesse and the group rush inside.

Chapter 5[]

"Excellent, excellent. Well if I'm not mistaken, you've just made it further into this temple than anyone ever before. You are truly something special."
—Vos amazed by Jesse. src

The group enters the Temple, and sponges emerge, soaking up the surrounding water. They remove their helmets and begin exploring the first room, where they encounter four pismarine colossi, whose heads eerily follow their movements. Jack explains that the carvings on the prismarine in the temple are unlike anything found elsewhere in the world. However, as they proceed, Jack begins to panic, shaken by his past experiences. While Petra scouts ahead, Jesse can either offer Jack reassurance or encourage him to move forward. Jack, determined not to reveal his fear to Petra, proceeds with Jesse and Nurm. The group finds the next door, which Jesse opens with the Gauntlet. Just as they pass through, the door slams shut behind them.

The second room presents a challenge, as Jack explains that it tests whether adventurers are worthy of the Structure Block. Inside, elder guardians are suspended in bubbles of floating water. The group must use the sponges to absorb the water and defeat the guardians. Nurm speculates that the Admin may be responsible for the strange, floating water, but Jack dismisses the idea. Petra suggests that one of them distract the guardians while the others work with the sponges. Jesse can choose to distract the guardians personally or let Petra handle it.

Depending on Jesse's choice, he/she either distracts the guardians or kills one him/herself. However, when Jack attempts to kill a guardian, he finds the inventory of his deceased friend, Sammy, nearby, causing him to freeze in horror. Jesse is forced to take over and finish the job. After the guardians are defeated, Jack apologizes, collects Sammy's items, and requests time alone. Petra worries for Jack.

Jesse begins searching for a way to open the door leading out of the room and notices several cages suspended from the ceiling, made of glowing obsidian. Upon closer inspection, Jesse engages in a conversation with a person trapped inside one of the cages. The prisoner believes that if Jesse can open the door, his cage will open as well. To solve the puzzle, Jesse uses dark prismarine blocks—crafted from prismarine crystals and shards dropped by the elder guardians—to construct a pattern on the door. The door opens to reveal the final room.

As the door opens, the cages release their prisoners, and one person falls out. Jack recognizes him as his old friend Vos, who has somehow survived. The two joyfully reunite, and Vos praises Jesse for making it further into the temple than anyone else, before expressing his desire to escape. However, Jesse decides to press on and venture deeper. The group proceeds into a corridor lined with smaller prismarine statues. Seeing another door ahead, Jesse uses the Gauntlet to open it, but doing so activates the statues, which come to life and begin pursuing them. The group escapes through the door, which slams shut just in time to block the statues from following. They enter the final room, where the Structure Block is believed to be.

The group climbs some stairs, and Jesse notices a strange portal-shaped terminal that seems important. Jesse also spots runes carved into the walls, which Nurm translates. The runes tell the legend of the Admin, which Jack dismisses as a "bunch of superstitious malarkey."

"Once the world was flat: No mountains, no rivers, no trees. Until the Admin built the mountains, sculpted the rivers, crafted the trees. The Admin saw there were no more heroes worthy of his challenges, so he left this world until the next great heroes emerged."
—The runes translated by Nurm. src

Jesse discovers two Structure Blocks: the "Tower of the Warrior," which creates an arrow tower, and the "Wall of the Builder," which forms an obsidian wall. After choosing one, the other vanishes.

Chapter 6[]

"I PLACED EVERY BLOCK YOU EVER STOOD ON, AND I PROMISE, I WILL PLACE THE BLOCKS THAT COVER YOUR GRAVE!"
—The Admin to Jesse. src

Before the group can leave, the prismarine statues from earlier break through the door and charge into the room, attacking. Jesse dodges their attacks and places the chosen Structure Block, either blocking the statues or killing some with arrows. In the midst of the battle, a massive prismarine colossus bursts through the wall, greeting Jesse with unexpected speech.

Jesse then fights a prismarine statue, defeating it by striking the weak point on the back of its head. Meanwhile, the prismarine colossus continues its rampage, smashing platforms with its arm as it closes in on Jesse and the group. Petra dangles from a platform, trying to reach Miss Butter, while Jack, Nurm, and Vos struggle to defend themselves against the smaller statues. Jesse must choose whether to help Petra retrieve her sword or help Jack and his friends.

Help Petra: Jesse runs over, pulls Petra up, and helps her get her sword. However, Jack is slashed in the face by a prismarine statue's axe, causing him to lose his "bad eye."

Help Jack, Nurm, and Vos: Jesse blocks a statue's attack with his/her sword, allowing the three to retreat. But as they do, the colossus smashes the platform Petra is hanging from, and she loses Miss Butter.

Either way, water begins flooding the Sea Temple, covering the platforms. Realizing they have no way out, Jesse clings onto the colossus' hand as it smashes against them, attempting to crush them against the wall and then the ceiling. He/she falls off the hand, but more water gushes in through the hole the colossus created.

The colossus reveals it is the Admin. The group attempts to escape through the water current the Admin created by smashing the ceiling. The Admin tries to stop them, but the group manages to escape through the hole and return to Beacontown.

The group returns to the Heckmouth area, where they fight off more charged creepers and use the Structure Block to seal the Heckmouth. Afterward, they return to town, where the citizens are celebrating Founding Day. Radar reports to Jesse; if Jesse left him in charge, Radar mentions how much work it has been. If Jesse didn't leave him in charge, Radar complains about the chaos, implying he wanted to be in charge.

Jesse presents the Structure Block to the citizens, who celebrate the group's victory. If Jesse helped Petra in the temple, Petra opts to stay with him/her when Jack, now wearing an eyepatch, proposes going on another adventure with her and Vos. If Jesse helped Jack, Petra joins Jack on the adventure after the group laments Miss Butter.

Jesse is left to ponder the Prismarine Gauntlet, which is still attached to his/her hand. Before he/she can take action, the ground suddenly shakes, sending the citizens into a panic. The Admin is revealed to have followed Jesse to Beacontown, and glares at the town.

"JESSE! YOU THOUGHT YOU COULD JUST RUN AWAY FROM THE ADMIN? YOU'VE REALLY GOT MY ATTENTION NOW."
—The Admin breaking into Beacontown. src

Post-credit Scene[]

In a post-credits scene, Lukas is writing in his cabin. Suddenly, he hears the stomps of the Admin, and, realizing he is headed for Beacontown, quickly dons his armor, grabs his bow, and mounts his horse to ride out and help Beacontown.

"Beacontown! Looks like it's time - to write the next chapter."
—Lukas noticing the Admin. src

Impacts[]

Season 1 choices[]

Certain decisions made in Season 1 influence dialogue and character appearances in this episode.

  • Depending on whether Magnus or Ellegaard survived in "The Last Place You Look", Axel or Olivia will mention the character who lived, having become their assistant, along with their respective towns.
    • The armor of the character who died can be found in the Order Hall and can be worn for the adventure.
  • If Jesse demolished Ivor's Pad in "Order Up!", the pad will appear in Beacontown with water instead of lava. Alternatively, if Jesse chose to let Ivor keep the pad, it will be surrounded by lava.
  • The creation Jesse, Axel, and Olivia built for the EnderCon Building Competition in "The Order of the Stone" will appear as a replica in Beacontown, and can be discussed with a townsperson.

Choices[]

  • How did you get into Stella's Treasure Room?
  • Did you think Radar was up for the task of running Beacontown?
  • When Petra was nervous to meet her hero, how did you tell her to act?
  • Which structure block do you think would be the most useful against the Heckmouth?
  • Did you assist Jack with his prismarine foes or save Petra's beloved sword?
